First held in 2023\, this awards event honors contemporary and historical Ridgefield women whose actions and advocacy make an impact upon social equity and justice\, democracy\, gun safety and women’s issues. The Alice Paul Award’s purpose is to elevate the achievements and contributions of women by celebrating their work and legacies\, telling their stories\, and inspiring women and girls to embrace the limitless impact they can have in the world. \nThe event recognizes International Women’s Day while honoring the legacy of suffragist Alice Paul\, a 40-year resident of Ridgefield\, who was a women’s rights activist during the early 20th century. She was a leader of the campaign for the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution\, which prohibits sex discrimination in the right to vote. \nThis year’s honorees were chosen for their vocal\, tireless activities to enact changes to stem the crisis of and proliferation of gun violence; advocacy for women’s rights; and initiatives that encourage young women to participate in voting\, elections and community betterment. \nContemporary Award Recipients Amanda Cordano serves as Executive Director for Ms. President US\, where wonderful female leaders introduce girls in 4th-12th grade to the joys of knowing how local\, state\, and federal government works. She is a Board member at the League of Women Voters of Ridgefield\, (Chair of Ways and Means\, and Chair of Membership) a non-partisan grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure that everyone is represented in our democracy. Her activism in the area of gun violence prevention and work with the March for Change demonstrate commitment to advocacy and action. \nGlori Norwitt is noted for her work from 2011-2019 as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Center for Empowerment and Education\, a non-profit which provides no-cost confidential services related to domestic violence and sexual assault. She continues on this Board as Secretary. Passionately committed to reducing gun violence through public education and legislative advocacy\, Glori served on the Board of CT Against Gun Violence (CAGV) and the CAGV Education Fund for which she was Chair. The Fund tackles issues including gun storage laws\, domestic violence\, gun safety and the impact of exposure to gun violence upon children. An advocate for women\, she currently serves on the Board of Planned Parenthood of Southern New England. \nHistorical Award Recipient: Laura Curie Allee Shields\, Suffragist \nIn 1920 Laura Curie Allee got a call from the headquarters of the National American Woman’s Suffrage Association\, soon to be the League of Women Voters\, asking her help in getting the 36th and last state\, Tennessee\, to ratify the 19th Amendment. She met with then U.S. Senator Warren G. Harding to enlist his help in getting Tennessee to vote for the amendment. Tennessee did so on August 26\, 2020\, and three months later\, Mr. Harding was elected President of the United States.
